There aren't many high school free safeties who fill in at tight end and project as an outside linebacker or defensive end in college, but Ace Foyil from Mandeville High School is the exception to the usual.
Foyil, 6-foot-4 and 220-pounds was named to the District 5-5A All-District team as a defensive back after totalling 112 tackles and snatching
2 interceptions as a senior but will move to the front seven as a collegian.
District 5-5A includes schools from the New Orleans suburbs and small towns on the Northshore and is one of the most competitive
5-A districts in the state.
A TI representative caught up with Ace Wednesday. Here's the take.
TI: Ace, let me get your vital statistics - height? weight? 40 time?
AF: I'm 6-foot-4, 220-pounds. Run a 4.6 40. My max on the bench press is 310 pounds. I don't squat but I powerclean 340 pounds.
TI: As far as recruiting goes, who are oyou hearing from the most, who do you have the most interest in?
AF: I'm mostly talking to Tulane, Arkansas State and Nicholls State, All three have already offered me a scholarship. I think my coach may have talked to McNeese, but I haven't heard from them directly.
TI: Have you set dates for any visits?
AF: I'm going to Tulane this weekend and Arkansas State next weekend.
TI: Do you have a favorite?
AF: No favorites.
TI: I understand that you played both offense and defense, give us your season stats for both sides of the ball.
AF: I only played tight end in one game, one of our tight ends was hurt. I mostly played defense. For the season I had 64 solo tackles and 48 assists, 112 altogether. Let's see there were 5 tackles for losses, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions and I forced two fumbles in 10 games. We didn't go to the playoffs.
TI: What did you do last summer as far as camps and combines go?
AF: I went to the Ole Miss and USM football camps.
TI: How did Mandeville High do last season?
AF: Our record was 4-6.
TI: Have you spoken to recruiters about what position they project you to play in college?
AF: I project as either an outside linebacker or a defensive end.
TI: And you're already academically qualified?
AF: I took the test in December and got a 21. My overall GPA is 3.3.
TI: What assistant coach is recruiting you for Tulane?
AF: Coach Garrett Chachere, the linebacker coach.
TI: Ace, what are you looking for in a college?
AF: I'm looking basically for a good academic program that will help me after college. And a good football program. Location's important, too.
