NEW ORLEANS, La.–Tulane University baseball standout Micah Owings was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball magazine on Monday.

A junior utility athlete from Gainesville, Ga., Owings earned the honor after hitting .375 (6-for-16) with four home runs and seven RBI while posting a victory from the mound with six shutout innings in Saturday's 24-2 win over Marist. The distinction marked the second time in 2005 that a Tulane player was named National Player of the Week as Brian Bogusevic claimed the same title on Feb. 14.

With the bat, Owings posted a 1.125 slugging percentage, a trio of two-hit games and a pair of three-RBI outings. He homered in three of Tulane's four wins last week, including a two-bomb performance in Sunday's 11-5 victory over Marist.

He started the week on a high note with a three-run homer in Tuesday'a 15-9 win over cross-town foe UNO, and scored the Green Wave's first runs in both Friday and Sunday's games against Marist courtesy of two-out solo home runs.

While toeing the rubber on Saturday, Owings gave up just one hit and walked one while striking out a season-best eight in a six-inning start. He struck out the first two batters he faced, fanned the side in order in the second, and posted a pair of punchouts in the fifth.

The lone hit he allowed came with one out in the third, and that baserunner was erased via doubleplay one at-bat later. After inducing a pair of groundball outs to start the sixth, Owings put a stamp on his outing by getting Red Fox leadoff hitter Travis Musolf to strike out looking.

Owings and the Green Wave return to action on Tuesday, March 8, when they travel to Baton Rouge to take on arch-rival LSU at 6:30 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium. The game against the Tigers will be televised live on Cox Sports Television (local channel 37) and will also be broadcast on the radio at WRBH 88.3 FM.
