No. 1 Green Wave To Host NCAA Baseball Regional

The entire 64-team tournament field, including the top-eight national seeds, first-round regional pairings and site assignments will be announced at 10:30 a.m. Central time, Monday, May 30. The committee will set the entire 64-team bracket through both the Super Regionals and the first round of the College World Series, and will not reseed the field after play begins. Selection of the eight Super Regional hosts will be announced on the ESPN Bottom Line Tuesday, June 7 at 11 a.m. Central time

NEW ORLEANS – For the second time in school history, Tulane University will host one of 16 NCAA Baseball Regionals, as regional sites were announced Sunday by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. The 2005 New Orleans Regional will be played June 3-6 at Turchin Stadium. Game times are tentatively set for 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with a 6:30 p.m. game on Monday, June 6 if necessary.

Tulane, the top-ranked team in college baseball for most of the 2005 season, will host an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2001, when the Green Wave played host to both a Regional and a Super Regional en route to its first College World Series appearance.

"Certainly our baseball team has shown that it is more than deserving of the opportunity to host a regional with its outstanding play this year," said Green Wave Athletic Director Rick Dickson.

"It's also been a record-setting year for us in terms of attendance, and we expect that to continue throughout the postseason. We're excited to be able to host another NCAA Regional and looking forward to a tremendous tournament."

Tulane drew a record 118,932 fans to its 33 home dates in 2005 while averaging 3,604 fans per contest to set another record. The Green Wave set six of its Top 10 single-game attendance records at Turchin Stadium in 2005. For the regional, new bleachers have been installed down the right and left field lines which will bring the capacity of the stadium to approximately 4,200, including standing room areas.

Tulane Head Coach Rick Jones, who takes a team to the NCAA postseason for the eighth consecutive season and for the 10th time in his 12 seasons with the Green Wave, was pleased with Sunday's announcement. Jones and the Green Wave (50-9) earned the league's automatic bid to the tournament Sunday after the C-USA Tournament Championship game was cancelled due to rain and unplayable field conditions.

"I'm happy that our fans will have a chance to see us play in the NCAA Tournament at home," Jones said. "For the team, the advantage is that you know every nook and cranny of your ballpark. But playing the game is still the thing you have to do best. It's nice to be at home, but once the games start, you've still got to win."

A year ago, Tulane won the Ole Miss Regional as the No. 3 seed and advanced to play in the Super Regional at Cal State Fullerton.

Both Ole Miss and Cal State Fullerton will host regionals again in 2005 while Arizona State, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, LSU, Long Beach State, Miami (Fla.), Nebraska, Oregon State, Tennessee and Texas make up the remaining sites. Oregon State is the only first-time host this year, while Long Beach State, Ole Miss and Tulane will host for the second time.

The entire 64-team tournament field, including the top-eight national seeds, first-round regional pairings and site assignments will be announced at 10:30 a.m. Central time, Monday, May 30, during a live, half-hour program on ESPN. The committee will set the entire 64-team bracket through both the Super Regionals and the first round of the College World Series, and will not reseed the field after play begins. Selection of the eight Super Regional hosts will be announced on the ESPN Bottom Line Tuesday, June 7 at 11 a.m. Central time.

Pre-orders for ticket books for the New Orleans Regional have been taken from all 2005 Tulane baseball season ticket holders and current Tulane Athletics Fund members at the $250 level and above. Any other ticket availability will be determined by the end of the day Monday. Check www.TulaneGreenWave.com for ticket updates.
