Green Wave Varsity To Practice Wednesday

Twenty-four newcomers practiced for the first time Tuesday afternoon while the varsity settled in and took physicals. Reportedly, players will be assigned temporary quarters in an on-campus dorm until they can move into their regular room assignments August 27.

The full Tulane football squad will hold it's first preseason practice Wednesday morning when 79 scholarship football players and 18 walk ons take the field to prep for the Green Wave's opening game aganst Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg on September 4. The 97-man squad includes 16 seniors.

The twenty-four newcomers included twenty scholarship players and four new walkons.

The Green Wave will practice in shorts and helmets Wednesday and Thursday, and shorts and shoulder pads Friday and Saturday before donning pads for the first time Sunday. All practices through Sunday, Aug. 14, will be at 7:40 a.m. and are normally open to the public. The first two-a-day practice of the season will be held Monday, Aug. 15. The morning practice schedule thereafter will be at 7 a.m., with the evening session scheduled for 4 p.m.

Media day is Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Tulane will hold its 2005 Fall Kickoff Luncheon on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at Noon at Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse. Fans are invited to hear head coaches Chris Scelfo (football), Betsy Anderson (soccer) and Liz Kritza (volleyball), along with Green Wave athletic director Rick Dickson, discuss their upcoming seasons.

The first event of the fall, "Let's Talk Tulane Football," will be held on Friday, Aug. 26 from 7-9 p.m. Sponsored by the Ray Hester Chapter of the Tulane Athletics Fund, "Let's Talk Tulane Football" will be held at Boomers, at Boomtown on 4132 Peters Road in Harvey. Cost of the event, which features an in-depth look at the team and the upcoming season by Green Wave head coach Chris Scelfo and the Tulane Football coaching staff, is $10 per person and includes an open bar and hors d'ouvres.

Fan Day festivities are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, with a soccer game between the Tulane Women's Soccer team and Troy University's women's team. And the new Tulane Marching Band will mstvh on for their debut performance.

The football and volleyball teams are scheduled to join the Fan Day festivities at 5 p.m. Earlier that day, the football team will wrap preseason camp with a closed practice in the Superdome.

The fall schedule of events includes, in addition to Fan Day, the Hullabaloo on the Green (Sept. 15), the Hall of Fame Breakfast (Oct. 1), a Tennis Calcutta (Nov. 11-12) and Athletics Alumni Weekend (Nov. 18-19).
