Can Madlock Shoulder Load?

Since last season, 2-year starting right guard Donald Madlock has had surgery on both shoulders. With the season opener against Southern Miss just 23-plus days away, it is still unclear whether he will be able to assume his starting position for the 2005 season.

Madlock, a 6-foot-4, 295 pound, redshirt senior is coming off his finest season with the Green Wave, starting all 11 games in 2004. Madlock graded out at a career-best 77% on 664 plays. He also recorded a career-high 12 knockdowns. He appeared to be primed for the best season of his collegiate career.

If he can go, Madlock would give the Green Wave 4 senior starters with a minimum of 2 years of starting experience along the O-line. Clearly, Tulane would have one of the stronger offensive lines in CUSA.

Michael Parenton (6-3, 292, R-Fr.) appears to be the heir apparent at right guard and would be the most likely candidate to start there if Madlock is not sufficiently recovered. Parenton practiced with the first unit at right guard Wednesday while Madlock dressed out, but did not participate in individual or team drills. A decision on Madlock's availability may go down to the wire.
