NEW ORLEANS, La.–On the surface, day four of the Tulane University football camp was relatively uneventful – position drills followed by implantation of new schemes and an 11-on-11 session that featured light hitting with players sporting shells for the second consecutive day.
Upon closer inspection however, there was an understated level of confidence and knowledge of the scheme that help make the practice sharp and productive. With 44 returning lettermen, including 17 starters, the learning curve has been flattened somewhat, and that has helped the Green Wave in their preparation for the 2005 season.
"As a coach, you're never where you want to be, but we are way ahead of where we were at this time last year," head coach Chris Scelfo said. "We have several veterans in key positions, and for some of them, this is their second or third go-round with camp. They know what to expect and they've reacted accordingly."
The Green Wave return nine defensive starters, including senior linebackers Anthony Cannon and Antonio Mason and cornerbacks Jeremy Foreman and Sean Lucas. Joining the foursome as returning starters are defensive linemen Taurean Brown, Antonio Harris and Craig Morris, along with strong safety Tra Boger, who missed most of last year with an injury but did start eight games in 2003.
On the offense, junior quarterback Lester Ricard headlines the eight starters back from 2004, and is joined in backfield by senior running back Jovon Jackson. Perhaps the most notable list of returning starters is along the offensive line where Joe and Matt Traina, Chris McGee and Donald Madlock all return, as well as tight end Bobby Hoover.
In addition, the Green Wave return their top punter from a year ago in 2004 All-Conference USA honoree Chris Beckman.
Tulane returns to practice on Sunday, Aug. 14 with a single session beginning at 3 p.m., and the team will hold its first two-a-day session on Monday, Aug. 15, with practices slated for 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The Green Wave kickoff the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Southern Miss before opening the home schedule on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. vs. Mississippi State.
