NEW ORLEANS, La. - After holding the annual Football Media Day in the morning, the Tulane football team hit the field at the Westfeldt Facility for a single-session afternoon practice on Tuesday.
Donning full pads, the Wave battled high temperatures and humidity during the 24-period session. The warm weather did not seem to affect either the offense or the defense, as both sides of the ball turned in a solid performance.
After several periods of special teams play to start the practice, drills shifted to a focus of pass offense and pass defense. Per the norm of Tulane practices, the final sessions were devoted to 11-on-11 scrimmage, where head coach Chris Scelfo saw several big plays, including a long touchdown run from true freshman running back Christian Ducre.
"We missed a couple of times today, but I thought the offense performed well," Scelfo said. "Our first offense was 10-of-12 on third and short, which is impressive."
Highlighting a solid practice from the defense was an interception by sophomore lineman Frank Morton, who rumbled up the field for a touchdown of his own.
"Frank plays the screen quite well, and he's always done that. I'm not sure if it's because he's not rushing really hard, or whatever," Scelfo said. "That was a nice play for him, and a big play for our defense.
"In certain situations I thought the defense played extremely well when they had the offense backed up. They really did a nice job on third down. I thought it was an overall good practice."
Scelfo cancelled Wednesday morning's practice session in favor of a single afternoon session. The Green Wave will have a singles session on Thursday, followed by the second two-a-day practice on Friday. Practice sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, however, will not be held on campus and will be closed to the public.
