TULANE FOOTBALL PRACTICES AT DOME WHILE KEEPING AN EYE ON HURRICANE Green Wave Closes Preseason Camp on Sunday Morning NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tulane football team logged 18 periods of practice on Saturday afternoon at the Louisiana Superdome while University officials kept an eye on Hurricane Katrina which was looming in the Gulf of Mexico.
"As a head coach, you have to maintain calm," Scelfo said of the impending hurricane. "We have to look out for everybody's best interests and safety first; then we worry about making us a better football team. We always talk about adversity and this team has proven to be resilient in the past, so we'll see how it goes."
The team opened with eight periods of special teams practice and then continued with regular drills and practice activities, wrapping up with Scelfo speaking to the players and staff about upcoming preparations.
"We looked good in our extended kicking and we showed a lot of teamwork," Scelfo said. "The guys' minds are floating with everything going on around us, but they handled it pretty good."
The Wave is scheduled to work out again Sunday in New Orleans before evacuating to Jackson, Miss.
The Green Wave opens the 2005 season on Sunday, Sept. 4 in a nationally-televised (ESPN2) game versus Conference USA foe Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Green Wave opens its 2005 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 17 in the Louisiana Superdome versus Mississippi State. Season tickets for the entire 2005 home schedule are on sale now at the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center, on-line at www.TulaneGreenWave.com and by calling 504-861-WAVE.
