Tulane Will Battle C-USA Foe Marshall

Tulane has won nine of its last 10 games and 11 of its last 13 contests, and enters the weekend 31-16 overall and in a three-way tie for third place in C-USA with a 7-8 league record. The Green Wave will look to continue its winning ways of late, but will have to do so against a Thundering Herd club that Tulane has never faced since the inception of the program in 1893.

NEW ORLEANS, La.–The Tulane University baseball team returns to action on Friday, May 5, when the Green Wave open a three-game series against Conference USA newcomer Marshall at 6:30 p.m. at Zephyr Field.

Tulane has won nine of its last 10 games and 11 of its last 13 contests, and enters the weekend 31-16 overall and in a three-way tie for third place in C-USA with a 7-8 league record. The Green Wave will look to continue its winning ways of late, but will have to do so against a Thundering Herd club that Tulane has never faced since the inception of the program in 1893.

The two teams continue the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on the flagship station of Tulane baseball, WRBH 88.3 FM, and for the first time this season, will be simulcast on WODT 1280 AM, The Sports Monster. In addition, the games can be heard on the internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com to subscribers of the All-Access Pass, and live stats are provided free via GameTracker.

As a team, the Green Wave are hitting .286 with a .413 slugging percentage courtesy of 82 doubles, eight triples and 33 home runs. Redshirt-freshman right fielder Warren McFadden leads the Green Wave with a .393 batting average, while junior first baseman Mark Hamilton and senior centerfielder Nathan Southard follow closely with respective averages of .335 and .322. Hamilton paces the team with 14 home runs and 55 RBI, and Southard leads the squad with 23 steals in 27 attempts.

From the mound, the Green Wave have a 4.08 ERA and have held opponents to a .258 batting average. As a staff, Tulane hurlers have combined for 340 strikeouts and 109 walks in 419.0 innings. Sophomore Sean Morgan paces the staff with 96 strikeouts and a 3.46 ERA in a team-best 80.2 innings. Senior Billy Mohl paces the club with seven wins, and junior Daniel Latham paces the bullpen with 27 appearances and has all 10 of the Green Wave's saves.

Marshall, meanwhile, comes to town 20-21 overall, 6-12 in C-USA action and coming off a 14-12 victory over Eastern Kentucky Wednesday afternoon in Richmond, Ky.

As a team, the Thundering Herd are hitting .308 with a .478 slugging percentage courtesy of 96 doubles, seven triples and 42 home runs. Rich Russell paces Marshall with a .366 batting average while Adam Frederick and Brit Vincent follow with .353 and .333 averages, respectively. Brendan Murphy paces the club with 12 home runs and 54 RBI, and Chris Monaco heads the squad with eight stolen bases in 12 tries.

From the mound, the Thundering Herd sport a 6.88 ERA and have allowed opponents to connect at a .311 clup. As a staff, Marshall hurlers have combined for 269 strikeouts and 176 walks in 350.1 innings. Jeremy Slone leads the Thunering Herd with a 4.81 ERA and 63.2 innings, while Chris Koutsavlis paces the club with six wins and 50 strikeouts. Brendon Bump leads teh bullpen with 20 appearances, and Brian Knippelmeye has five of Marshall's nine saves in 2006.

The Marshall series marks games two, three and four of a seven-game homestand for the Green Wave. Following the weekend against the Thundering Herd, Tulane closes out the home portion of its schedule on May 12-14 against C-USA rival Southern Miss before traveling to Birmingham to take on UAB on May 18-20 for the final series of the regular season.
