Wayne's Notebook: Sept. 20, 2006

The offense opened in a three receiver, one tight end set versus the Cougars, but went to the two tight end, two receiver look to start the Mississippi State game. Neither of the Green Wave's fullbacks, Ian Miller or Ade Tuyo, played against State, with the Wave putting the second tight end in motion and using him as a lead blocker as a substitute for the fullback

Let's take a look at the Tulane depth chart as the Green Wave heads into Game 3 at LSU. We'll look at who started and/or played in each of the first two games. Altogether, Tulane has used sixty-one players in the first two games.

Take notice that the Wave opened in different defensive and offensive sets in each game. Against Houston the Tulane defense played much of the game in a nickle set. In the Mississippi State game, the defense opened in it's base defense.

The most notable thing about the game rotation is that a number of players who played in the opener - especially the defensive players and the reserve offensive linemen - did not play in the State game. Six of these players were true freshmen.

One player not on the depth chart has played - kicker/punter Barret Pepper replaced punter Chris Beckman after Beckman injured his foot in the State game.

Oddly, deep snapper Craig Gelhardt does not appear to have played against Mississippi State. Nominally, the backup deep snapper is true freshman Kevin Leary, only Leary didn't play either. The teams OTHER deep snapper is senior tight end Jerome Landry. By process of elimination, we conclude that Landry handled the deep snapping against State.

And one player who has played in both of the first two games, cornerback Matt Harding, is not listed on the depth chart. Harding reinjured his shoulder.

As you can see from our chart, the six true freshmen who played against Houston but were witheld from action against Mississippi State were safety Chinoso Echebelem, linebacker Adam Kwentua, linebacker Josh Mitzel, defensive end Logan Kelley, defensive tackle Oscar Ponce de Leon, and offensive tackle Nick Landry. One of the interesting things to watch with the Tulane football team this year will be whether any of these six freshmen play again.
