Wayne's Notebook: Nov. 26, 2007

The commitments break down to one of each: running back, fullback, quarterback (D.J. Ponder who plays receiver in high school), tight end, defensive end, and linebacker

The Tulane football team closed out the season with a disappointing 35-12 road loss to the East Carolina Pirates. We'll be brief in looking at participation in the ECU game.

The season finale game book shows that two seniors who have not been in the game rotation, receivers Fred Smith and Evan Smith, played in the final game.

On another note, Nick Landry opened at right tackle in place of Tyler Rice. Landry is the fifth player to start at right tackle for the Green Wave this season. It was Landry'sfirst start at right tackle but he also got a start at left tackle in the UAB game.

From start to finish the other four to start at right tackle are: redshirt freshman Pete Hendrickson (2 starts); fifth-year senior Scott Holt (3 starts); third-year soph Travis Olexa (1 start); and third-year soph Tyler Rice (4 starts).

Rice did play in the ball game.

Tyler Helm made his fourth start at tight end. It will be interesting to see whether Helm can hold on to the starting job in spring practice.

Troy Wilson came off the bench at defensive end.

Cody Sparks started for the fourth time at sam linebacker and Jordan Ellis made his fourth start at will linebacker.

Michael Batiste made his first start of the season at receiver.

The recruiting season will begin this week. Tulane will host prospects on official visits the next two weekends and again in January.

National Signing Day is February 6, 2008. The signing period will end April 1.

At this point the Green Wave has eleven verbal commitments, including fullback Kasey Stelly, who is officially classed as a 'soft' verbal.

The commitments break down to one of each: running back, fullback, quarterback (D.J. Ponder who plays receiver in high school), tight end, defensive end, and linebacker.

The rest of the early verbals are three offensive linemen and two safeties.

For an analysis of the 2007 football squad by class and position, go to the Tulane Insider Eligibility Tracker and count returning players. Remember that Eligibility Tracker includes non-scholarship players.

The present count of available scholarships is seventeen. The number of available scholarships will probably increase by two or three, but that number could grow.

Given losses from this year's team, it would appear that there is still a need for defensive linemen, particularly tackles, in this class and two or three, maybe even four of the currently available scholarships could go for interior defensive linemen.

Other possible areas of interest could be the receiver and cornerback positions, positions where Bob Toledo & Co. have yet to obtain a single commitment.

Or with a single commitment each at defensive end and linebacker, the Green Wave could take another player at either one or both.

Fottball season 2007 is over - recruiting season 2008 begins.
