Green Wave Holds Off Mustangs

Tulane (2-2, 1-1) took a commanding 31-7 halftime lead, but the SMU Mustangs (1-4, 0-2) would not give up that easily as June Jones' run-and-shoot offense scored 20 second half points to give the Green Wave faithful some anxious moments down the stretch. In the end, despite two untimely third quarter turnovers and several costly penalties, Tulane was able to hold on for the 34-27 victory.

Tulane jumped out to a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter when Kevin Moore hit Jeremy Williams on a 51 yard scoring pass. SMU answered with a 45 yard scoring strike from Bo Levi Mitchell to Aldrick Robinson to cut the Green Wave lead to 17-7 with 11:14 remaining in the first half. The rest of the first half belonged to the Green Wave as Andre Anderson scored from one yard out and Moore hit Williams for their second scoring connection to expand the lead to 31-7.

A pair of third quarter field goals by SMU's Thomas Morstead cut the lead to 31-13 with 5:20 left in the quarter. Mitchell then threw an 18 yard touchdown pass Emmanuel Sanders early in the fourth quarter to make the score 31-20. Ross Thevenot hit a 43 yard field goal to give the Green Wave a 14-point cushion with 4:01 left in the game. SMU's final drive was aided by three 15-yard penalties and culminated with a 13 yard scoring pass from Mitchell to a diving Terrance Wilkerson in the endzone.

Tulane's offense was paced by running back Andre Anderson who turned in a career-high 219 yards on 36 carries and one touchdown. Anderson also had 38 yards receiving, giving the junior 257 all-purpose yards on the night. Quarterback Kevin Moore was very efficient, completing 19 of 24 pass attempts for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns with one interception. Jeremy Williams led all Green Wave receivers with 6 catches for 124 yards and two scores. Cornerback Dominique Dade and safety Corey Sonnier led Tulane with 4 tackles apiece.
