Spring Scrimmage #3

The only thing more noticeable than the Golden Hurricane dominating defense was the setting for the squad's third spring scrimmage. The 9:45 A.M. kickoff was accompanied by a temperature of 34 degrees and a wind chill of 22 degrees.

Tulsa - The weather could be to blame for the offenses slow start. Those in attendance could argue that the lack of success was more because of bad luck and less because of bad play. Head coach Todd Graham would disagree. "It was an OK scrimmage, it was not a great scrimmage" Graham noted. He also stressed to the team that fixing unnecessary penalties and discipline would be the key to finishing the spring in a positive way.

OFFENSE

After the well documented sluggish start by the 1st team offense, Quarterback Paul Smith came on strong and finished the day with 17 completions on 28 attempts. Unpredictable cold wind and drops by the receiving unit aided the defense. Jamad Williams led the team in carries (14) and touchdowns (2). Tarrion Adams led the team in rushing yards with 103. Adams picked up 63 of those yards on a touchdown run up the middle of the field. While not having as impressive stats as Williams or Adams, Cody Madison ran extremely well, gaining 72 yards on 10 carries. Scratch out Tarrion's long run of the day and Madison looked physically, the most impressive. Smith, David Johnson, and Clark Harrell, tossed the ball fairly even to the receivers. Nick Henderson and Jesse Meyer shared the team high in catches with 5 a piece. Henderson also had 2 Td's to go along with 56 receiving yards. Tight end Ted Curtis had only one catch but it was a beauty. Curtis got behind the defense on a 46 yard seam route thrown by David Johnson and took it to the house.

DEFENSE

Visually, it was easy to see that the defense took control of the scrimmage. Even so, the unit still managed to give up 624 yards, 330 through the air and 294 on the ground. Keep in mind this was not timed like regular season games, instead added up through 120 plays. Anthony Germany forced a fumble on the second play of the scrimmage which led to the scoop and score by Alain Karatepeyan. Germany did not play the rest of the scrimmage seemingly with a minor injury. He did return for one play on the Kick Return team. Kenny Sims had an outstanding day at cornerback with an interception and a fumble recovery. Sims also had two pass break ups, one being a touchdown saving knockdown in the end zone. Drew Cuffee played equally well with an interception of his own and several big hits.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Charles Davis handled the 1st team Kick Return and Punt Return duties. He didn't get much of a shot at breaking a run due to the wind keeping the ball high in the air and a short whistle to prevent injury. Jarod Tracy looked great in a strong wind during PAT's and field goals. Tracy was good on three field goals hitting from 35, 36, and 39 yards. 1st team punter Paul Jarado was harassed and helped by the wind depending on which way it was swirling.

The 2 hour scrimmage ended with 1 vs. 1's in an overtime situation and a situation of a game winning field goal. The offense was successful on both attempts. The Canes have 5 more practices before the spring game April 21st at 6:00 P.M.
