JR RB Prospect Jackie Bates

You don't see too many backup running backs earn All-State honors, but Concord (Calif.) De La Salle is a special program, and running back Jackie Bates is a special player. After backing up committed Bruin Maurice Drew, Bates is now the man...

Jackie Bates, 5-10, 185 pounds, played behind All-American Maurice Drew a year ago but he has been on our radar since his sophomore year when, in a JV game, he scored five touchdowns against Long Beach Poly (Calif.).

As a junior last year on varsity, Bates rushed 69 times for 747 yards (10.8 avg.) and scored 15 touchdowns to earn All-League and 2nd team All-State Underclass honors. Bates also saw action at cornerback and safety and said he wants to be recruited as an athlete to play on either side of the ball.

Speed is Bates best asset. He clocked a 10.7 in the 100m last spring and runs consistently in the 4.4 range. He has great feet, is very quick and runs with power. With Drew off to UCLA, Bates will be the man next season and should put up monster numbers on the field.

On the recruiting front, Bates is hearing from all of the Pac 10 plus Colorado, Michigan, Nebraska and Ohio State.

"I like Cal, Miami, Texas, UCLA, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and Oklahoma," Bates said. "I'm looking at a school where I can play early, has a solid academic reputation and a good social life."

Bates is currently carrying a 2.8 GPA and will take the SAT in May. He'll attend the NorCal Nike Camp, Cal's football camp and possibly camp at USC and UCLA as well.
