Friday Prospect Preview: Week Two

A few teams are in action on Friday night with several Thursday night games played this week, but Saturday night has a big intersectional game between Fresno Central and Temecula Chaparral...

Game of the Week: Fresno Central at. Temecula Chaparral
This game will present one of the best 1-on-1 matchups in the West, when Chaparral receiver Antoine Arnold, one of the top pass-catchers in the 2011 class, matches up against Central cornerback Tee Shepard, the best corner in the 2012 class in the West, and a player UCLA has already verbally offered.  But those aren't the only standouts, in game featuring several top 2012 prospects, including Central quarterback Mike Baker and Chaparral linebacker C.J. Dozier.  Chaparral fell to defending D-I state champion Oceanside a week ago and is looking to get back into the win column against a Central team without four-star running back Brendan Bigelow.

Stockton Lincoln vs. Sacramento Grant
UCLA commit Brandin Cooks and 2012 target Charles Howard will face their toughest test of the year when they take on the state's top team, Grant HS from Sacramento, in a loaded affair.  Cooks will try to get behind a strong secondary featuring 2011 four-star safety James Sample and 2012 five-star safety Shaquille Thompson, who also plays running back.  Howard will anchor an offensive line that must stop five-star defensive tackle Viliami Moala for the Pacers and three-star defensive end Faigame Lopa.

Narbonne vs. Long Beach Poly
A Southern Section power and a City Section power collide in a big game between the Jackrabbits and Gauchos.  Poly is still smarting from a thrashing they received from St. Bonaventure a week ago, and with Washington commit Kameron Jackson and linebacker Corey Waller, both players UCLA is still recruiting, their defense will try to slow elite 2013 quarterback Troy Williams, who's protected up front by UCLA recruit Dontae Levingston.

Oaks Christian at St. Bonaventure
In most years, this would be a marquee matchup between the two best private schools in Ventura County, teams that have won over 10 CIF-SS titles between them in the past decade and three state titles.  St. Bonaventure looks to build on their win over Poly a week ago, behind junior lineman David Barajas and 2011 defenders Jalen Jefferson and Cody Kurz.  The Lions will answer with 2012 receiver Jordan Payton, a USC commit, quarterback Trevor Gretzky and receiver Blair Holliday, who's headed to Duke.  They'll do it without UCLA recruit Dillon van der Wal, who's sidelined with a leg injury.

Stockton Lincoln vs. Stockton Edison
UCLA's committed receiver Brandin Cooks, who committed to the Bruins back in the spring, went over 100 yards in the opener and he and teammate Charles Howard, a defensive lineman in the 2012 class will take on upstart Edison, who boasts a handful of D-I prospects.

Mayfair at Lakewood
City pride is on the line when Mayfair, led by quarterback Evan Hunko and offensive lineman Justin Northern visit Lakewood, featuring UCLA commit Torian White, UCLA target Todd Barr and Rahim Cassell and the best pair of junior receivers in the state, Malik Gilmore and Darius Powe.

Newport Harbor at. Loyola
The Cubs will try to get back into the win column this week, and with quarterback Jerry Neuheisel back from a stomach ailment, they'll face fellow Pac-5 member Newport Harbor, who has Stanford-bound defensive lineman J.B. Salem up front to hound Neuheisel.  Kodi Whitfield, a 2012 prospect, figures to be one of Neuheisel's targets, as will Arizona commit Jared Baker out of the backfield.

Other UCLA Commits in Action
Modesto Christian and tight end Raymond Nelson face Modesto Downey. Rancho Bernardo and Aaron Wallace take on Fallbrook. Plano East and center Jacob Brendel are off.

Other UCLA Offerees in Action
Norco, behind UCLA target Brent Walker and Stanford commit Kelsey Young, will face Oregon commit Jamal Prater and Etiwanda.  Encino Crespi and 2012 tackle Jordan Simmons and recruit Devin Lucien at receiver take on Clovis West and Nevada commit Kendall Brock and recruited defensive end Donovan Lewis. Quartz Hill takes on Bakersfield and Mercy Maston. Point Loma and defensive tackle Christian Heyward take on Lakeside El Capitan and San Diego State commit Robert Craighead. Moreno Valley Rancho Verde and tight end Junior Pomee take on Yucaipa.

Thursday Night Action
Chandler (Ariz.) and UCLA committed quarterback Brett Hundley downed Mesa, 25-7.  Jason Gibson and Gardena Serra, with UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel and offensive coordinator in the crowd, dropped Mira Costa, 35-13. Beverly Hills and Greg Townsend topped San Marcos, 36-0.  Mission Viejo bounced Corona and DeVante Wilson, 56-34.  Los Alamitos and UCLA commit BenWysocki beat West Adams Prep, 35-6.  UCLA commit Marc Mustoe and Arvada West thrashed Cherry Creek, 53-16.
