Powell Reaches His Decision

Norman Powell, the top priority for UCLA at shooting guard in 2011, made his college choice on Sunday...

Norman Powell, 6-2 SR SG San Diego (Calif.) Lincoln, has committed to UCLA, according to a source close to the recruitment.

Powell, a very athletic prospect with a high upside, was recruited by Arizona and San Diego State, among others, prior to giving his verbal commitment to Ben Howland.

Powell is the first commitment in 2011 for UCLA. The top shooting guard in the West Coast class of 2011, he gives the Bruins an explosive athlete in the backcourt.

While he still has a lot to learn, Powell has the potential to be a terrific defender. He's an excellent finisher in the open court -- probably the best the Bruins have had in that department since Russell Westbrook. While he's not a great shooter -- shot is a bit flat -- he makes enough jumpers now that he should ultimately be an adequate shooter down the road.

With Powell committed, the UCLA staff will now focus on the upcoming visits next weekend from Adonis Thomas and Quinn Cook.
