Weekend Prospect Review: Week Three

De La Salle wins a showdown with Gorman and UCLA's committed quarterback Brett Hundley has another big night in a win...

Game of the Week: Concord De La Salle def. Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, 28-14
De La Salle safety Antoine Pickett got things started with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff, but then Gorman scored a pair of touchdowns to go up.  Then the Spartans got things going thanks to 2012 quarterback Bart Houston, who threw for a touchdown and ran for one to allow the Spartans to come back and beat the Gaels, in a matchup of California and Nevada's defending state champions.  Gorman's 2012 running back Shaq Powell ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns, but a fumble early in the third allowed the Spartans to tie it up, returning it for a touchdown.

Chandler def. Brophy Prep, 43-29
Chandler and UCLA committed quarterback Brett Hundley prepped for their showdown with Chandler Hamilton with a win over Brophy Prep.  Hundley was 22-for-36 for 373 yards and four touchdown passes, while rushing for 123 yards on 18 carries.

Mission Viejo def. Long Beach Poly, 37-7
Mission Viejo took advantage of a Corey Waller-less defense for the Jackrabbits, and rolled to an easy 30-point win over Poly.  Dallas Kessman ran for 137 yards and scored four touchdowns.  The Diablos were down a star of their own, linebacker Tre Madden, but the offense made up for it.  2012 running back Jahleel Pinner ran for 110 yards and scored a touchdown and 2012 quarterback Alex Bridgford was 8-for-20 for 106 yards and a pick.

St. John Bosco def. Loyola, 37-15
After a career game against Newport Harbor, Loyola quarterback Jerry Neuheisel was sidelined with a concussion, and his absence kept the Cubs out of the win column, but gave the Braves a much-needed non-league win.  Elite 2012 receiver Bryce Treggs scored a pair of touchdowns and had an interception in the win.

Alemany def. Taft, 36-26
Taft suffered another loss to a Southern Section, coming up short in their rally against Alemany.  Senior quarterback Vernon Adams was 12-of-24 for 219 yards and rushed for 30 yards in the win for Alemany while the Toreadors got 120 yards on eight receptions from UCLA recruit Michael Thomas.  Arizona State commit Michael Bercovici was 19-for-47 for 208 yards.

Lakewood def. Leuzinger, 44-0
Lakewood, featuring UCLA commit Torian White, UCLA target Todd Barr and Rahim Cassell and the best pair of junior receivers in the state, Malik Gilmore and Darius Powe, had no problem with Leuzinger.  Gilmore had four catches for 61 yards while Powe had two catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.  But the star of the night was Barr, who had seven tackles but made a bigger impact on offense, catching just two passes, but both going for touchdowns.

Stockton St. Mary's def. Stockton Lincoln, 28-25
A brutal schedule continued to treat Lincoln bad, with the Trojans falling to the Rams by three.  UCLA commit Brandin Cooks had seven receptions for 66 yards and scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion in the loss.

Vista def. Great Oak, 30-6
UCLA recruit Stefan McClure caught seven passes for 136 yards and scored a touchdown in a rout over Great Oak.

Other UCLA Commits in Action
Modesto Christian and tight end Raymond Nelson had a touchdown reception and averaged 38 yards a punt in MC's first win of the season, a 44-0 win over Riverbank. Rancho Bernardo and Aaron Wallace defeated Escondido, 45-7. Plano East and center Jacob Brendel lost to Flower Mound Marcus, 31-17.  Los Alamitos offensive tackle Ben Wysocki and the Griffins fell to Valley Center, 31-28. Arvada West and Marc Mustoe are off.

Norco, behind UCLA target Brent Walker and Stanford commit Kelsey Young, defeated Upland, behind UC Davis commit Justin Nunes and 2012 receiver Kenny Lawler, 35-21.  Encino Crespi and 2012 tackle Jordan Simmons and recruit Devin Lucien at receiver beat Chula Vista, 52-6.
