The top team in the state, Hamilton, boasts the top player in the state, offensive tackle Christian Westerman, the top interior offensive lineman in the country. Chandler answers with the reigning State Player of the Year, and a future Bruin in quarterback Brett Hundley, the West's top quarterback. Hamilton has already taken out one premier team, in Bishop Gorman, the defending champs from Nevada, but they'll be tested by Hundley's dual-threat ability in a game televised nationally.
Westlake at Oaks Christian on FSN West at 8:30
Two teams not far from each other, both on the street and on the field, face off for the first time in a game matching two state powerhouses. The Lions are 2-0 in their first year in the Marmonte League, while the Warriors are the defending league, and CIF-SS champions, and are looking forward to taking on their crosstown foe. Oaks will be starting Richie Harrington at quarterback, instead of Trevor Gretzky, but he'll be bolstered by the return of 2012 receiver Jordan Payton, a USC commit, and 2011 tight end Dillon van der Wal. Blair Holliday, a Duke verbal, has been the one consistent threat for the Lions. Meanwhile, Westlake has the versatile dual-threat quarterback Nick Isham and another two-way player in Nelson Spruce, who camped at UCLA earlier this summer. The Warriors also have a D-I back in Tavior Mowry and one of the best defensive linemen in the 2012 class, Justin Solis.
Upland vs. Loyola
The Cubs have dropped three straight games, and quarterback Jerry Neuheisel is coming off a concussion suffered a week ago against St. John Bosco. The Cubs boast a top 2012 receiver in Kori Whitfield and Arizona commit Jared Baker in the backfield. Upland features U.C. Davis commit Justin Nunes and elite 2012 receiver Kenny Lawler. We saw these two teams against each other this summer in the Bonita 7on7 Tourney, and it was a shootout, but this one means much more.
Gardena Serra vs. Narbonne
The defending CIF State D-III champs, Serra, take on City Section runner up Narbonne in an intersectional matchup. The Gauchos feature 2011 offensive lineman Dontae Levingston and 2013 quarterback Troy Williams while the Cavs feature the West's top safety in Marqise Lee, the state's top receiver in George Farmer, and a quarterback who's won 19 straight starts, in Conner Preston.
Compton vs. Lakewood
Lakewood, featuring UCLA commit Torian White, who just received a USC offere, UCLA target Todd Barr and Rahim Cassell and the best pair of junior receivers in the state, Malik Gilmore and Darius Powe, takes on Compton in their league opener as they begin defending their Moore League title. Compton has one of SoCal's best running backs in the 2012 class in Roger Jones.
Crespi vs. Vista Murrieta
This one features underclassmen on each team with verbal offers from UCLA, including Crespi's 2012 tackle Jordan Simmons and Vista Murrieta's 2012 linebacker Jeremy Castro and 2013 safety Su'a Cravens. Crespi also features recruit Devin Lucien at receiver and defensive end Reggie Coates. Vista Murrieta highlights Utah commit Derrick Brown at quarterback and USC track commit Jovonte Slater in the backfield.
