Patton is Doing His Homework

Thomas Patton, the defensive lineman from Oakland (Calif.) Tech, is flying down to Los Angeles specifically to come to UCLA's one-day camp on Saturday, to see if he's serious about the school and to see if UCLA is serious about him...

Is it significant that Thomas Patton, DE/DT, 6-4, 250, 4.9, Oakland (Calif.) Tech., is flying down to Los Angeles solely to participate in UCLA's one-day camp?

"Well, yeah," Patton said.

Is UCLA his favorite college at this point? "Well, no. I don't really have a favorite right now. I like Arizona, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, and Cal. Those are probably my top five."

Patton said that Colorado has also offered him, and he's hearing pretty heavily from Miami, Illinois and Utah.

Patton, who had 70 tackles and 7 sacks as a junior, said that all of the recruiting attention has made him think seriously about what he's looking for in a college. "I'm looking for a college that has my major - electrical engineering. And I like big schools. I want to check out the coaching, and the people at the school. Weather isn't a big factor."

With Patton obviously being very business-like about choosing a school, he said, though, it didn't mean he was looking to get the decision over with soon. "I'm definitely going to take my time. I'm going to wait until I take my recruiting visits. I just don't know them very well yet and I want to get to know them well before I make my decision."

Patton said he's also prety serious about academics, too. "I have a 3.13 core GPA. I took the SAT before and passed the NCAA standard. But I just took it again June 2nd to try to score higher."

Patton will continue his unofficial visit itinerary next weekend. After visiting Stanford unofficially for the Nike Camp, and seeing UCLA this weekend, he'll then go to a camp at Cal next weekend. "It's all pretty exciting. I've been to L.A. before but I've never been to UCLA. Going to Stanford was great. And it will be great to go to Cal. It's just a lot of fun."
