Reports have Howland flying to Los Angeles tonight. Sources indicate he'll meet with UCLA chancellor Albert Carnesale either late Tuesday or early Wednesday. At that time, it's expected that UCLA will formally offer Howland the job.
The word is that he'll be announced as UCLA's new head coach Thursday, but possibly as early as Wednesday afternoon.
This whirlwind courtship comes as a result of Howland and Guerrero coming to an agreement in principle concerning his compensation and his assistant's compensation, according to sources.
After meeting with Guerrero and associate athletic director Besty Stephenson during the weekend in Santa Barbaba, Howland flew back to Pittsburgh Monday. He met with his team Monday afternoon, and listened to a new, sweetened proposal by Pittsburgh's administration.
Sources close to the situation assert, though, that Howland, a Southern California native and professed UCLA fan when he was growing up, couldn't pass up the chance to coach UCLA.
