Football Recruiting: Safeties

UCLA has a commitment from one of the best safety prospects in the west, Eric McNeal, but there are more elite prospects that UCLA is targeting, including a JC player and an athlete from Arizona who strongly favors UCLA...

Eric McNeal, ATH/WR, 6-2, 180, Gardena (Calif.) Serra. COMMITTED. Eric had a great season as a junior, excelling at safety and quarterback. He loves wide receiver and has already cleared it with the UCLA staff that he'll get a shot at wide receiver if he wants it. But most project his future at safety, where his aggressiveness and hitting ability can really shine. He's been ranked among the top 100 players in the country as a safety.

Mike Nixon, ATH/QB, 6-2, 185, Phoenix (Ariz.) Sunnyslope, Nixon could be one of the best all-around athletes on the west coast. He plays quarterback and safety for his high school team and, while he would like to be recruited as quarterback, most project him as a safety, and he has said he flexible. Also, most encouraging is the fact that Nixon has said that if UCLA offered him he'd more than likely commit. He's also interested in Cal, Oregon and ASU. A very good student.

Randy Beckman, 6-0, 200, 4.5, Glendale College. Beckman is considered one of the best JC DBs in the west, having made all-conference last year as a freshman. He has shown interest in UCLA and UCLA is interested in him.

Jim Kanuch, 6-2, 185, Johnstown (Penn.) Westmont Hilltop. A top 100 player nationally, Kanuch is fast and aggressive. So far, among all the Nike camps, he has recorded the second-fasted shuttle time at 3.84 (another strong UCLA lean, Joe Garcia, recorded the fastest at 3.82). He is an accomplished running back but projects as a safety in college. Being from Pennsylvania you would think Kanuch might be a hard get but he has shown a great deal of interest in UCLA. UCLA is recruiting him hard and he could definitely be an out-of-stater that comes to UCLA. Penn State is the main competition.

Jomario McClain, ATH/WR, 6-2, 170, 4.4, Pico Rivera (Calif.) El Rancho. McClain is a promising prospect. He is a little thin-framed, but with his speed and talent projects as a nice free safety. He has said in the past that UCLA was his favorite but acts intimidated by UCLA's academics. Arizona State is doing well with him.

Daniel Robinson, 6-3, 180, Barstow (Calif.) High. A teammate of UCLA commit C.J. Niusulu, Robinson is a nice athlete, with quickness and vertical. He also has a nose for making plays, seemingly all around the ball.

Darnell Bing, 6-2, 210, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly. Really one of the elite prospects on the west coast this year, Bing might project as a linebacker if he gets bigger. UCLA is trying hard but he doesn't seem to like the Bruins.

Bernard Lam, 6-3, 186, La Jolla (Calif.) Bishop's School. Lam really showed his raw athleticism at the San Diego Nike Camp. He ran a 4.49 40, a 4.22 shuttle, did 17 reps on the bench and jumped 27 inches in the vertical. Some have said he could be the best talent in San Diego this year. UCLA is watching.

Michael Cuba, 6-3, 190, Taylor (Tex.) High . Considered one of the best safety prospects in Texas, which always says quite a bit. Cuba has good size and good closing speed. He has UCLA as his favorite, over Colorado, Texas, and Texas A&M. UCLA will continue to scout him and he could develop into someone UCLA eventually signs.

Idris Moss, ATH/QB, 6-1, 180, 4.5, Riverside (Calif.) Eisenhower. Thought to be one of the best all-around athletes in SoCal, Moss spends most of his time at quarterback, but is projected as a safety on the next level. He has great quickness and instincts. UCLA is recruiting him. Washington is probably the favorite.

Rory Carrington, ATH, 5-11, 190, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly. Carrington is what you call a very good football player. He plays running back/fullback for Poly. But it's hard to exactly project him on the next level. If he gets bigger he could be a fullback, but many scouts project him as strong safety. UCLA likes him and Carrington has told various sources that if UCLA offered he'd commit.

Matthew Melton, 6-2, 190, Tyler (Tex.) John Tyler. A nice-looking prospect from Texas, Melton has listed UCLA among his favorites and the Bruins are scouting him.
