Burgess Changes Heart

Irvine Woodbridge center David Burgess, who is one of the two best post players in the west, has some big-time programs showing interest in him and he tells us how he had a change of heart about a west coast school of particular interest...

David Burgess, 6-10 JR C Irvine (Calif.) Woodbridge, told us recently that he's in the process of setting up visits with coaches at his high school. UCLA coach Ben Howland came to Woodbridge over a week ago and Louisville's Rick Pitino is scheduled to visit with Burgess on April 23rd. Gonzaga's Mark Few will come in on April 22nd or 24th.

While Burgess stressed that he's still open to any number of schools, he did say that he was very impressed with Howland. "The thing I liked about him was that he was straight up," said Burgess. "The first thing he told me was that I need to get low and use my butt. He also said he liked me because I get in the paint and play physical. He wants me to take an unofficial visit to UCLA either this week or next week."

Burgess said he would not have been interested in UCLA without a coaching change. "I wasn't interested at all in UCLA with [former head coach Steve] Lavin, but I kept them on my list because I knew he would be fired," said Burgess. "Once Howland came in they were right there on my list."

Burgess says he doesn't plan on making a quick decision. "I see myself going through the summer, but I'll sign before my senior year."
