Safety Prospect Sanders

Earning a big rep as one of the best defensive backs in the west, Carson's Chet Sanders missed this year's L.A. Nike Camp, but his recruiting hasn't been affected. He has a list of favorite schools, and one that's been coming on strong...

Chet Sanders, 6-1, 185, Carson (Calif.) High, is rising quickly up the charts of recruiting services nationwide, and could be one the best safeties in Los Angeles this year. And that's enough to make his name a popular one with coaches around the country.

Sanders is hearing from a large number of schools, several local ones and multiple national powers. "I'm hearing from Oregon, Arizona State, USC, UCLA, Washington State, Texas, Miami, Tennessee and Michigan." He also expects to hear from Florida, Florida State and Notre Dame soon.

When asked about his favorites, he had no delay naming his top three, and then adding one more to his list. "Arizona State, because that's where I was born and I really like them. Miami, they are my childhood favorite. USC, because they are local and real good. And UCLA has come on lately and started contacting me."

Though he didn't participate at the Los Angeles Nike Camp because of an injury, i5 hasn't deterred college coaches from showing him interest. "I really wanted to participate at the Nike Camp (at USC) but I was injured and couldn't do anything. I was bummed," he said. So Sanders instead will go to the Nike Camp in Eugene, along with a four-day camp at Arizona State, his current favorite.

With a bevy of schools interested in him, Sanders is in no hurry to make a decision and fully expects to take all of his visits, since the official trips will play a huge role in where he decides to go. "Playing time, academics (Sanders wants to be a Pharmacy major), the program are all important, but I want to know when I visit that I have a good time and really like the place."

With a list of national schools, Sanders is getting plenty of support from his mother to go where he wants. "She really has no favorite. She wants me to go where I want and she is behind me 110 percent."

While he is playing free safety at Carson, he wouldn't mind playing a little offense if a staff wanted him to play there. He said, "I'll play wherever, but I am a free safety first."

Sanders has a 3.0 GPA and will take his SAT in June.
