UCLA Looks at JC O-Lineman

One of the top JUCO offensive line prospects available after the 2011 football season is College of San Mateo's Fehoko Fanaika (6-6, 340) and several four-year schools have already been in contact with the big prospect and he spoke with JCFootball.com recently about things...

Fanaika prepped at Florin High School in Sacramento, California and knew he wasn't going to be able to qualify for a four-year scholarship, so he listened to a family member and took his advice on where he should play JC football.

"My cousin Jim played there a few years ago and when I talked to him he said I should check it out at San Mateo," Fanaika told JCFootball.com. "I went and met the coaches and it felt right so I just decided to head here and play ball.

"I also needed to get out of Sacramento and get out on my own and meet some new people so that's what I was able to do by coming here."

As a freshman last fall, Fanaika weighed 370 pounds and started only a couple of games, but an offseason regimen of running and lifting to go along with a better diet has allowed him to shed some of those pounds.

"I run a mile every morning and then I lift and I eat right," Fanaika said. "It's really helped me get in great shape and I feel stronger and like I can go all out all the time.

"I have another 10 pounds I want to lose because I want to be 330 this fall and I should be able to do that pretty easily."

On the topic of recruiting, Fanaika is still waiting for his first offer, but a few schools have made contact and more are coming through the school nearly every day.

"There have been a lot of schools coming in and talking to my coaches, but the ones I've talked to personally are UCLA, Nevada and Texas Tech," Fanaika noted.

Fanaika is on pace to graduate in May of 2012 and he will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.

We will continue to keep track of his progress through the recruiting process and we will update news as it happens.
