Mathis Hopes Camp Earns Offers

Ventura (Calif.) Buena defensive back Kendrick Mathis had a good showing at UCLA's camp on Sunday and he plans to be back for the Bruins' next camp later this month...

Ventura (Calif.) Buena safety Kendrick Mathis (6-1, 182) still holds one offer, but he's hopeful that some Pac-12 schools will be joining the mix soon.

Mathis, who's had numerous family members at UCLA, was at the Bruins' camp on Sunday and thought he had a good showing.

"At the UCLA camp, I thought I did well," said Mathis. "I did safety and cornerback and Coach (Clark) Lea said he's very interested. Even if it takes senior film, they like me. But he was with the linebackers, so he said they were going to watch the film and let me know."

Mathis uncle is former Bruin star Eric Turner and his cousin, E.J. Turner, is a walk-on with the Bruins, so he's hopeful that UCLA can keep a family pipeline going.

Still, he's open to all comers at his point.

"Hawaii is my only offer, but I think Washington State is probably going to be soon," said Mathis. "Coach (Chris) Tormey and Coach (Chris) Ball have been really interested in me. And I'm also hearing from South Florida, Washington as a running back and Utah. San Diego State is also interested."

Mathis said the majority of his attention is coming as a safety. He plans camp visits the next two weekends.

"I'm going to USC on Sunday and then probably back to UCLA (on the 19th)," said Mathis.

Academically, Mathis has a 3.3 GPA and took the SAT earlier this spring.
