Edwards Commits to the Bruins

Bakersfield (Calif.) Ridgeview cornerback Shannon Edwards, who shined at UCLA's Skills Camp on Sunday, will stay in-state and play for UCLA...

Bakersfield (Calif.) Ridgeview cornerback Shannon Edwards blew away the UCLA coaches on Sunday, clocking a 4.39 in the 40 at their skills camp.

On Monday, the UCLA coaches returned the favor, offering Edwards a scholarship.

On Tuesday, Edwards accepted the offer and committed to the Bruins.

The verbal concluded a whirlwind three-day span for the speedster from Central California.

"Running a 4.3 was my goal, but I knew I still had to impress the coaches in the 1-on-1's to get the offer," said Edwards. "Right after lunch (at the camp), I felt pretty confident that they would be offering me. I talked with Coach (Jim) Tresey and Coach (Tim) Hundley after the camp and they really liked me."

So Monday, when Edwards called UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, he got the offer.

"I talked it over with my parents for a day and then I called them on Tuesday and committed to UCLA," said Edwards. "Coach Neuheisel was who I committed to and he was pretty excited."

Edwards said it was an easy decision.

"It was a no-brainer," said Edwards. "UCLA is a great education, has a great atmosphere and it's just a great situation. I'm very excited."

Edwards said his family is thrilled too.

"They're very excited, because it's close to home, and I mean, it's UCLA, it doesn't get any better than that," said Edwards.

Edwards also had offers from Washington State and Oregon State and was planning to camp at Washington this weekend, but he said he'll be staying in the Golden State.

"I'm going to go back to UCLA for the B2G Elite Camp and then I'm going to try and see more of the school," said Edwards.

And now he can enter his senior season without the weight of his recruitment keeping him down.

"Now I can focus on football and my grades," said Edwards. "I have a 3.1 and if everything works out, I will graduate early."
