Monrovia (Calif.) five-star defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy (6-4, 311) was one of the standout prospects at The Opening last weekend.

The West's top defensive tackle said he's got a top five, but still isn't quite ready to eliminate everyone.

"My top five is USC, Cal, Oregon, Washington and Florida," said McCarthy. "I'm still considering some other schools too, but those five stand out."

McCarthy said he's not planning any unofficial visits for the rest of the summer, and he'll take all five trips come fall and winter.

"I'm just visiting the close ones like USC and UCLA," said McCarthy. "I went to UCLA the other day. It went really well. I talked to the coaches there and got to see the campus."

For the Trojans, Bears, Ducks, Huskies and Gators, McCarthy said the relationship with each staff has put them in front.

"When I talk to the coaches at each school, they make me feel real comfortable," said McCarthy.

McCarthy said he's not likely to use an official visit on the Trojans.

"I probably won't visit USC officially because I've been there so many times," said McCarthy. "I'll go somewhere else, to the far away schools."

And McCarthy has a time frame for when he wants to make a decision.

"I'm playing in the U.S. Army Bowl so I'll probably choose then," said McCarthy.

He's also got a good idea of what he's looking for in a school.

"I want to go to a place where I feel comfortable at, where I can be for four years and just play football," said McCarthy. "I want to major in business, so I'd like to go with a good business school."
