Four-Star Poutasi Still Favors Two
Jeremiah Poutasi has turned into one of the most heavily recruited linemen in the country with 17 offers and more possibly on the way. Trying to narrow down that list to a top five has been difficult, but Poutasi does have two schools that he's favoring at the moment.
"I know that UCLA and Utah are going to be in my top five. I'm not sure who the other schools are going to be, but those schools are the two on top right now," Poutasi said.
Both schools are also heavily pursuing his cousin, offensive lineman Brandon Fanaika out of Pleasant Grove (Utah), who is considering both the Utes and Bruins.
Poutasi said: "I was talking to Brandon, and he was telling me about Utah. I went out to the camp at Utah State and I loved the weather and everything out there. I also really like Jay Hill. He is a very good coach. Utah also has a lot of Polynesians. They have more than UCLA. UCLA has really nice weather. It was great last time I was out there. I like the program out there and the coaches. They also have great academics."
With those 17 offers in hand, the 6-5, 315-pound Poutasi is still hoping for at least two more from a Pac-12 and a Big 10 school, respectively.
"I also like Iowa and Oregon," Poutasi said. "Iowa is one of the top programs in the country and put a lot of linemen in the NFL. They haven't offered me yet though. I talked to one of the Oregon coaches today, but they haven't offered me yet either. They said they want to wait and see my grades, but they should be offering me."
Despite a previous inclination to wait until after the season, it appears the lineman wants to move up the process and make his decision sooner than anticipated.
He said: "I was thinking about making my decision at the middle of the season, but I need to take a few visits. I'm trying to get a hold of Coach Hill to see when the earliest is that I can take a visit over to Utah. I've been to UCLA three times already so I don't know if I'll be taking an official visit there."
What's going to put one school over the top when deciding between surf and ski? Poutasi is looking for a place that works for him and his family.
"I want a school with a good history and I just need to talk to my parents about it and see which one fits me best," Poutasi said. "It's probably going to be UCLA or Utah. They're both good schools, but I'm just not sure right now."
With his close to ties to Fanaika, the draw of playing with family could net one school two elite players: "We are thinking about playing together more, but we're not 100% yet. I know he wants to go to Stanford, and that's a great school, but we're always talking about it and that would be great to do."
