Thursday it was very evident just how depleted the UCLA defense is.
In the linebacker drills, there were only four scholarship players participating, with six out (Aaron Wallace, for whatever reason, didn't participate, but was later on scout defense). Of most immediate concern was Jordan Zumwalt and Glenn Love both in street clothes.
In the secondary, two safeties are out, but Tony Dye practiced, in a red, no-hit jersey, which puts the safety numbers at four.
By the way, we reported that Dye would play this season, but probably not until next week against Colorado. Now it's pretty clear he'll play this weekend against Utah.
At cornerback, two players are out, and one (Tony Jefferson) is back, but probably not available to play, leaving three cornerbacks, plus Randall Carroll.
Kevin Prince had a pretty sharp practice, throwing the ball well in both individual and team. Wide receiver Shaquelle Evans probably had the catch of the day, when he caught a deep ball with one hand. Joseph Fauria had a couple of nice touchdown catches in red zone.
The scout team offense, however, had a fairly good day against the defense. Nick Crissman, as Utah quarterback Jon Hays, completed a good number of passes.
The bear statue on campus has already been covered, two weeks before USC week.
