Armstead Has Whirlwind Weekend

The nation's top ranked prospect, Elk Grove (Calif.) Pleasant Grove lineman Arik Armstead took in unofficial visits to USC and UCLA this weekend...

Elk Grove (Calif.) Pleasant Grove offensive tackle Arik Armstead has taken two official visits, and has another one set in stone.

But this past weekend was about unofficial visits for Armstead, visiting USC and UCLA, seeing basketball games for both schools, a football game at USC and meeting with the football and basketball coaching staffs at both schools.

"We went to the UCLA-Loyola Marymount game on Friday (at the Sports Arena) and we got their early and met with one of the coaches," said his father Guss. "Then we left at halftime so we could catch the second half of the USC-Cal State Northridge game. We watched a little bit of that and met with Coach (Bob) Cantu and Coach (Kevin) O'Neill after the game."

Saturday was dedicated to USC football.

"After the game, we went and hung out with Armond (Armstead, a defensive lineman at USC) and then went to the game with Armond on Saturday and watched the game. Then Arik had time to spend with Coach (Lane) Kiffin and the coaches after the game," said his father. "The coaches from USC have still been recruiting him and will continue to recruit him."

Sunday took Armstead up to UCLA, the first school to offer him nearly three years ago.

"Sunday, we met with UCLA's recruiting coordinator and then we talked with the defensive line coach, Inoke Breckterfield and met with him and did some film stuff with him and some defensive philosophy stuff. Then we met with Coach (Rick) Neuheisel, and he took him on a tour. He also got to meet with (strength & conditioning coach) Coach (Mike) Linn since he does both basketball and football. We also met with UCLA's basketball coaches, Coach (Scott) Garson and Coach (Ben) Howland. Part of the deal was getting clarity from them if they're open to Arik playing two sports, and they certainly were," said his father.

Guss Armstead said that Arik hasn't narrowed his list down and that USC and UCLA are very much candidates for him, and that despite his decomittment from USC, the Trojans are not out by any meaning.

"At this point, he's open to anyone who's open to doing the two-sport thing, and interested in talking to him," said his father.

This weekend comes Armstead's next official visit.

"We're definitely visiting Oregon officially this weekend," said his father.

And the other two visits are trying to be finalized.

"We're still working out the trip with Auburn (for the Iron Bowl Thanksgiving weekend), and we're planning on trying to go to Texas on December 9th," said his father.

This weekend, Armstead and Pleasant Grove will play Turlock (Calif.) Pitman in the quarterfinals of the CIF-SacJoaquin Section playoffs.
