When Steve Broussard left the Arizona State program to head to UCLA, the players perhaps impacted the most were the players from Long Beach Poly HS. Broussard cultivated a relationship with the players over the past year, and his departure for the Bruins has everyone thinking, including wide receiver Richard Smith.
"We're really close. He went to school with my girlfriend's dad, so that was a weird connection. We just got real close, we'd talk during the week, and we talk about just life and how things are going and he's a really cool guy. So once I heard about him going there, I was excited," he said.
"It really surprised me, I never expected Broussard to be going to UCLA. I didn't think he was going to leave. I actually liked UCLA a lot but I liked Broussard a lot…so I was on twitter today and I caught a tweet that said Broussard might be working at UCLA, so I called him right then and there and he said yeah."
But for Smith, recruitment isn't as simple as just following one coach, no matter how close they may be. "I'm still committed to Arizona State," he said, and after the new coaching hire of Todd Graham and staff, Smith is considering every option. "I'm still really interested in Oregon State and Washington State, and am considering those programs, too."
