Monday's practice was the first day of actual bowl preparation for UCLA, and with the installation, the tempo slowed quite a bit during team drills, with more time being taken for teaching in between plays as the players got acclimated.
As with the preparation for Oregon, Brett Hundley led the scout team offense and again looked pretty good doing so. He got intercepted just once during the first session in scout, and that was more due to a poorly run route by Logan Sweet than a bad throw. Kevin Prince looked good during scout periods, but had a bit of a rougher time in 7 on 7, missing his receivers high again.
Sheldon Price looked very good after getting a couple of days of rest for his knee. He had an interception during the 7 on 7 and another during scout periods. He's looking more and more like he did before the knee injury, and definitely looks quicker pivoting.
Even with the installation, there still seems to be a much stronger emphasis on fundamentals across the board. When Prince was having a rough stretch during 7 on 7, Mike Johnson demonstrated to him the proper footwork. It's hard to say what kind of effect it'll have for the actual game with just three weeks of this, but you have to figure that these extra practices have been very useful for UCLA.
Alex Mascarenas, who took a hit down the sideline in Saturday's practice, received eight stitches for cuts both below and above his left eye. Kevin McReynolds went down during practice with a left knee injury. After being taken to the shed, he remained at practice on the sideline, with his knee heavily bandaged.
Patrick Larimore, who tore a ligament in his thumb, will see the doctor on Friday to determine his status for the coming week. Johnson is expecting him back next week.
Johnson also said that he's concerned about one or two guys who might have academic eligibility issues heading into the bowl game.
Damien Holmes was not at practice.
