Practice Notes, Johnson Video

With Richard Brehaut suspended, Darius Bell gets a long look at quarterback, and a few new faces pop up on the offensive line and look OK...

It was an eventful day out at Spaulding field today. Richard Brehaut, Alberto Cid, Tony Dye, and Isaiah Bowens will not play in the bowl game. Cid, Dye, and Bowens are academically ineligible, and Brehaut has been suspended for a violation of team rules.

On the offensive line, there was a lot of mixing and matching going on with the loss of Cid and the continued absence of Wade Yandall (concussion) and Chris Ward (knee surgery). Jeff Baca moved inside for most of his snaps, and it's clear that's probably more his natural position.

Conor Bradford got a long look at quick tackle, with Baca moving inside, and judging by the way he looked, he's probably not ready to play a ton of snaps. He was beaten pretty regularly by whichever defensive end he was matched up against during 11 on 11, with Damien Holmes scooting around him for would-be sacks a couple of times. If Baca moves inside for the bowl game, I think you'd have to expect a combination of Mike Harris and Brett Downey taking the majority of time at the tackles.

Casey Griffiths also got a lot of work inside, usually in tandem with Downey when he was playing at tackle.

Brandon Sermons was not in uniform, nursing a shoulder injury. Stan McKay looked like he pulled up lame in the workouts prior to stretching, but he continued practicing so it was probably a cramp.

Darius Bell got the primary backup reps, with Brehaut out, in an effort to get him ready for potentially being Kevin Prince's backup in the bowl game. He actually looked OK considering he hasn't been running UCLA's offense nearly at all this year. Passing will be an adventure though, so Mike Johnson and Marques Tuiasosopo are going to have to put in a lot of work with him over the next week to get him ready.

Practice over all was slower than it has been, which Johnson addressed in the post game scrum. During scout periods especially, the players looked pretty lethargic. Not really what you'd like to see after they skipped practice.

An MRI on Kevin McReynolds knee showed a stretched MCL. Brett Hundley was not at practice because he received permission to go home early due to the way it worked out for his airfare.
