Powell Closes In on a Decision

Upland (Calif.) fullback Christian Powell is excited about his recent visit to Westwood and is planning on making his decision sometime this week...

Upland (Calif.) fullback Christian Powell was wowed by his visit to UCLA on Saturday, and has a new leader heading down the home stretch of his recruitment.

"It's down to UCLA and Colorado, but I really like UCLA right now," Powell said. "They're probably leading for me at this point."

Powell wants to make his decision sometime this week, and the sooner the better so as not to drag out the process longer. He said the visit helped to solidify a lot of things he'd already thought about the program.

"It was a really cool visit," Powell said. "I liked it. I like the school, the academic programs, the football support, the Rose Bowl. It was all great."

Powell spent much of his time on the visit meeting with the new running backs coach, Steve Broussard, who talked with him about how they plan to use Powell and the fullback position in the offense.

"Coach Broussard was great," Powell said. "I really liked him, and he seems like a good person and a good coach. He talked to me a lot about how they want to use me in the offense, and how they plan to use the fullback, and it was good to hear what they had to say."

Powell, who only met with offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone briefly, said that UCLA is recruiting him as a fullback, but that he wouldn't be opposed to a position change at some point "if (he) has to."
