Brooks Opens It Up

Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon wide receiver Julian Brooks got some mixed signals from Arizona this week and has opened his recruitment back up...

Well, this is certainly one way to deal with a soft commitment. Heading into this week, Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon wide receiver Julian Brooks was a soft commit to Arizona. Now, with some odd communication with the Arizona coaching staff in the past two days, his recruitment has opened back up.

"I don't even know what's going on right now," Brooks said. "(Arizona) called me and pulled my scholarship, and then like 20 minutes later called me back and said, "We apologize. We thought you were, not committed anymore. Blah blah. But you still have your scholarship." So I guess I still have my scholarship."

Brooks said the series of phone calls came yesterday, and on the first phone call, the unnamed coach left a voicemail to let Brooks know that he no longer had a scholarship. Brooks said the whole experience soured him on Arizona, and left him with two leaders.

"Right now, it's probably UCLA and Oregon tied as my leaders," Brooks said. "I'm going up on a visit to Oregon next weekend, and then I think UCLA is going to offer me soon."

Brooks doesn't yet have formal offers from Oregon or UCLA, but he's expecting to finalize an offer with Oregon the weekend of his visit.

"I like Oregon a lot," Brooks said. "I've been talking with Coach Scott Frost up there, and I really like the offense."

The three star is being recruited primarily as a receiver at UCLA, and his recruitment is being handled by a familiar face in Coach Steve Broussard.

"I've been talking mostly with Coach Broussard and a little with the offensive coordinator, Noel Mazzone," Brooks said. "I like Coach Broussard. He's cool. He was trying to get me over to ASU when he was over there, so I've been talking with him for a while."

It's obviously a bit of an awkward position for Brooks to be in, what with not holding formal offers from his two top schools. He does have offers from ASU and Colorado as well, but reiterated that his top two, at least right now, are the Ducks and Bruins.

"It's fine," Brooks said. "I'll find a good fit for me."

He didn't know yet when he would be making his final decision, since he doesn't know yet which schools will end up formally offering him, but hoped to do it soon.
