Monrovia (Calif.) defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy, the #2-ranked defensive tackle in the country by Scout.com, and a five-star prospect, has committed to UCLA, according to his father Ed.

McCarthy had committed to California on January 7th during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, but he told Scout that he still planned to take an official visit to UCLA.

With Tosh Lupoi, who had been recruiting McCarthy to Cal, leaving Berkeley for the defensive line coaching position at Washington on Monday, that gave UCLA a chance with McCarthy, who was expected to visit officially this weekend.

McCarthy had an already scheduled in-home visit with UCLA defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin, and committed to Martin and the Bruins.

His verbal is the biggest commitment in the short tenure of new head coach Jim Mora and is largely attributed to Martin, who had McCarthy in for an official visit when he was at Washington.

A position that UCLA has consistently struggled to recruit at, McCarthy is the first five-star defensive tackle to commit to the Bruins since Brian Price signed with UCLA in 2007.

Price, of course, would go on to become the 2009 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and an All-American.
