2014 QB Getting Head Start

Petaluma (Calif.) Casa Grande quarterback JaJuan Lawson is starting early on the process...

Petaluma (Calif.) Casa Grande quarterback JaJuan Lawson (6-1, 190), is only a sophomore but he's not wasting any time getting familiar with the recruiting process.

Lawson started as a sophomore for Casa Grande, taking over for Nick Sherry, who's now at UNLV, and fit in just fine for Casa Grande.

Earlier this month, the class of 2014 prospect took in USC's Junior Day and also an unofficial visit to UCLA.

"The visits were great, both schools had great traditions, and the atmospheres were great," said Lawson. "I loved the coaches there at each school."

Lawson said he wanted to get a sneak peek at what the process is like.

"At this point, my plan is more or less a chance to get a head start on the process and make bonds with the people at the schools," said Lawson.

While at USC, Lawson spoke with a handful of coaches.

"I talked with Coach (Clay) Helton at USC, probably with him more than anyone," said Lawson. "And I talked to Coach (Lane) Kiffin for a little bit."

At UCLA, he spoke with assistant coach Angus McClure.

"We talked with Coach McClure for a while and we got to walk around and check out the campus," said Lawson.

Working out at UCLA that day was Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, and Lawson got to meet him and get his picture taken with the former Heisman Trophy winner.

"When we got to meet Tebow, that was kind of nerve racking but was really exciting," said Lawson. "But it was overwhelming."

While Lawson knows it's early, he said a handful of schools are already showing interest in him.

"The schools I think are interested right now are Arizona, Washington, UCLA, USC and Oregon," said Lawson.

Lawson said he plans to participate in the Bay Area Elite 11 and Nike Football Training Camps as well as some 7on7 tournaments this spring and summer.

Brandon is in his eighth year with Scout.com and FOXSportsNext, currently as a National Recruiting Analyst and West Regional Manager. Prior to joining the Scout Recruiting Team, he was a team recruiting writer.  He's been covering recruiting for the Scout Network since 2003.
