Corner Gets Offer, Wants Another

One of the better looking corner prospects in the Golden State next year has to be to Poway (Calif.) athlete Derek Babiash. The defensive back just picked up his first offer and it comes from the Pac 12...

Derek Babiash plays on both sides of the ball but will likely be recruited primarily as a corner. He's a very good looking prospect with excellent size and athleticism for the corner position. He looks all over 6-1 with long arms but has the speed and hips to turn and run with some of the faster receivers out there as well.

He picked off three passes in Poway's 56-0 demolition of Vista in the San Diego section Div I championship game and earned all-league and all-CIF 1st team honors following the year.

"I just got offered by Oregon State," Babiash said. "Coach [Danny] Langsdorf hit me up on facebook and when I called him up, he said they were offering me. It's always exciting to get that first offer and I definitely have a lot of interest in Oregon State.

"They used to have some good teams and I know all about the Rodgers brothers and the success they had. They said they want me to come out in April for spring practice and that's what I'll likely do."

Babiash said UCLA and San Jose State are also showing interest.

"UCLA invited me to their Junior Day this weekend and I'm planning to be at that. San Jose State wants me to camp with them in the summer. Right now, my top schools are UCLA, Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona and Arizona State.

"I've liked UCLA since I was a kid and if they were to offer, it would be hard not to jump on it. As of now, I'm planning to go through the process but it depends on who offers and shows the most interest."

As for what he's looking for in a school, Babiash said he's looking for the right combination of academics and athletics.

"I want to major in something sports related like marketing or training," Babiash said. "I also like the West Coast and would love to stay close to home if I can. I'm looking at the depth chart a little too, I want to play early if I can. I don't want to go somewhere and have to sit back and watch for two or three years before seeing the field."
