He was in even more exclusive company when he left with an offer from the Bruins.
"The coaches had hinted that I could get one, but by the end of the day, my hopes weren't as high as they were at the beginning," said Dowling. "Then Coach (Jim) Mora pulled me aside and offered me."
And Dowling said even with the hints, the offer caught him off guard.
"The offer surprised me a lot," said Dowling. "I wasn't expecting it so it was a real nice surprise."
Dowling said he was impressed with everything UCLA had to offer.
"I really like the campus and the coaches," said Dowling. "My mouth was open the whole time and it was pretty much the most beautiful campus I've ever seen. I've been to Boston College and Navy and UCLA was just amazing."
Dowling said he liked the Bruin coaches he got to meet.
"Coach Mora will definitely have UCLA re-emerging as a Pac-12 powerhouse and a national powerhouse. My father is in the military and Coach Mora has that understanding and respect like the military," said Dowling. "Coach (Adrian) Klemm was a really great guy too. He's not a yeller but he knows how to get stuff done and I'd love to be coached by him."
Dowling also has an offer from Colorado and said a number of other schools are showing interest in him.
Academically, Dowling has a 4.1 GPA.
