Fresno D-End Still Patient

FOX Sports NEXT caught up with Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial defensive end Jaylen Ruiz at the New Level Athletics Elite 7on7 Tournament to talk his favorite schools, off-season training, and more...

Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial defensive end Jaylen Ruiz spent his weekend at the New Level Athletics 7on7 Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"I've been working hard in the off-season, working on my speed and agility and trying to get good grades in school. I've been doing lots of shuttle drills and five-yard sprints, drills like that," he said.

Ruiz is patiently waiting for his first offer, but is enjoying the recruiting process and has been in contact with a few programs.

"I've had contact with some schools, like Oregon State and UCLA. I like OSU's defense and coaching staff and I met the Bruins head coach Jim Mora; he was really cool. I'm interested in those two programs as well as California and Oregon. I'm really looking forward to my freshman year and my goal is to play as a true freshman," he said.

Though he's keeping his options open, Ruiz is hoping to end up at a program on the West Coast.

"The West Coast is where I'm from and I like being over here. I'm used to it and to the nice weather," he said.

He doesn't have any visits set just yet, Ruiz is planning on taking a few trips in the upcoming months.

"I want to take visits, but I haven't decided which colleges I want to go see yet," he said.
