"It wasn't really out of the blue, I have been talking to their tight ends coach for a while," said Mattingly. "I called them after school and they offered. They want me as a tight end."
"I know they live, breathe and die Oklahoma football down there," said Mattingly. "They love it down there."
In addition to Oklahoma, Mattingly was offered by Arizona State. The Sun Devils were a program that the junior had highlighted early in the process as a dream offer, due to extended family living in the area.
"All my family down there was excited," said Mattingly. "I have been talking to a lot of people down there that had good experiences there."
So are the Sun Devils an early favorite?
"I really don't want to mention any favorites because I haven't seen them all," said Mattingly. "After I take my official visits I will be able to put together a list."
"I definitely know I will take visits to Arizona State, Oklahoma and UCLA," said Mattingly. "As for the summer, I don't have too much planned. I know I will be at the Nike Combine on June 10th."
Mattingly said programs are evenly divided on which position they see him playing. At least at this point, he doesn't have a preference on where he'll line up.
The 6'5" 225lbs prospect feels like two more schools could join his list soon.
"Two schools that have shown a lot of interest and that I am interested in are Missouri and Notre Dame," said Mattingly. "I talked to the Notre Dame tight end coach, but they actually like me at outside linebacker. Missouri likes me at tight end."
Even with attention from programs all over the West, Mattingly was able to identify the two programs that are recruiting him the hardest.
"I'd say UCLA is recruiting me the hardest, I like the coaches down there," said Mattingly. "Washington as well… I'll call them just to talk. They are really cool and easy to start a conversation with."
"I am just having a lot of fun. My head is just spinning," said Mattingly. "I can't commit to them all, but there are a lot of great programs out there."
