Westwood is Getting Fuller

Devin Fuller talks about what position he expects to play in the fall, whether he'd be open to switching positions, and when he's arriving in Westwood...

We talked with Devin Fuller about coming to UCLA.

Q: What position are you expecting to play this fall?

A: Quarterback.

Q: Did you follow the quarterback competition this spring?

A: Yeah, I did. I was up there for a week. I went to three of the practices, and also sat it on a bunch of the meetings. It was a lot of fun.

Q: What did you think overall of the practices, the pace, the tempo, that sort of thing?

A: Oh, it's changed a lot since last time I saw it under Coach Neuheisel. Much more up-tempo, up-beat. You know, make-correction-later type of thing. The emphasis was on just having a lot of fast pace, and I really liked that.

Q: Did you attend any of the meetings where they would take care of the teaching moments, between practices?

A: Yeah, every time they'd practice, the next day, they would watch film of the practice, going over what went right, what went wrong and how to improve. I really liked that way of coaching.

Q: What are your expectations for the fall? Looking at the quarterbacks, do you think you have a shot at really making a move in the competition?

A: Well, for me, I think I've got a shot, so that's all I'm going with going into the fall. I've got a shot to compete, but I know that there are a lot of guys ahead of me. They're great quarterbacks, too, so it'll be a challenge.

Q: What do you think your strengths are as a quarterback?

A: Athleticism, I'm quick, I make good decisions. I've got great escapability, and play-making ability.

Q: Say you don't win the quarterback competition, would you be open to playing at a different position, or fitting into a situational role?

A:I haven't really talked about it with anyone, so right now I couldn't answer that. I just haven't thought about it or spoken about it yet. In high school, I've always played quarterback, and on the defensive end, I played safety.

Q: When are you going to be heading to Westwood?

A: I think I'll fly in on June 23rd, and then June 24th I'll move in.

Q: And you've got a bunch of family out here, right?

A: Yeah, my aunt and uncle are out here, so that's a cool part of coming out here.

Q: How much of a role did that play in committing to UCLA?

A: Oh, it's great. Sometimes, I can go get a home-cooked meal once in a while, which is a nice thing to have when you're away from home.

Q: With summer school closing in, are you prepared for the transition to college academics?

A: Yeah, right now, I'm just doing my senior year and trying hard not to get senioritis, and that's very hard to do right now. But I know the study habits, and what I have to do to get on the right track. Once I get onto campus, I know I'll be working hard.

Q: Are you planning on participating in the 7-on-7 and workouts over the summer?

A: Yeah, that's the plan for now.

Q: Have the coaches given you any direction in terms of workouts, whether they want you to put on weight, or do any specific workouts?

A: They haven't said anything like that. I mean, they sent me a workout plan, but I went there, and they said I looked good. I mean, they didn't tell me to gain or lose any weight, so I think I'm pretty good to go heading into the fall.
