Shepherd Has In-State Leader

Lakewood (Calif.) wide out Xavier Shepherd camped at Cal a few weeks ago and the Bears made a big impression on the talented athlete...

Although it has been two weeks since the receiver was in Berkeley, Xavier Shepherd still is buzzing about his time in Berkeley.

"I really like California a lot, they're on top for me right now," Shepherd said. "I spent a lot of time with Wes Chandler, the receiver coach and he taught me a lot in just a few hours. We talked a lot off the field as well and he's a great guy and I really like him.

"He showed me their depth chart for the next few years and they really need receivers bad. On top of that, Cal is a great academic school and I really liked the campus and just everything about the place."

Shepherd said he'll likely take one more unofficial visit this summer and then the rest of his visits will all be official's in the fall.

"I'll probably go back up to UCLA one more time," Shepherd said. "I haven't talked to them in a few weeks but I know they really want to get me up to campus. I went to a spring practice and I really liked it there. There's definitely a big change in the culture at UCLA so I'm giving them a hard look.

"As for my official visits, I'm starting to look at finalizing my list right now. I know I'm going to visit Utah and Oregon State for sure. I'm going to check those out for sure but I'm not sure about the others. I want to take all of them though so I'll just keep those open right now."
