Mathis is finally winding things down as he prepares for his senior season, and he ended things with The Opening over the weekend.
"The Opening was real good with all the top coaches and players," said Mathis. "Getting to work with Ndamakong Suh, and other top players and top coaches and people just being real hungry to be the best they could, was a great experience. I always wanted to go to camps to have fun. I don't play for rankings, I play to have fun and enjoy football."
Mathis is also enjoying the recruiting process, with several suitors after him.
He recently named a top ten, and while at one point he had a trio standing out, he said all ten are now on equal footing.
"My top ten is Alabama, USC, UCLA, Washington, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Nebraska, Michigan and Miami," said Mathis. "They're all even at this point. Before the season, I'm sure I'll have a top five but it could be a top seven if USC and UCLA are in it. I won't visit USC or UCLA officially, but if I still like them, then it will be a top seven, and the other five will be the ones I visit."
Mathis said that four schools are likely to get official visits from him.
"I'm going to visit Michigan, Nebraska, Arizona State and Texas A&M," said Mathis. "Those are the ones I know for sure. I'll take all of my visits during the season and I'll announce at the Army Bowl."
Mathis said he'd be taking the next couple of weeks off to recover from a busy offseason and turn his attention towards his senior year.
"My knee and foot are a little messed up, so I'm going to take a little time until the season and just get back to 100%," said Mathis.
