Upon his return home, though, Willis felt improvement in the back, and with Marcos De Niza beginning their fall practice this week, Willis was back out with his team, ready for his senior year.
And it will be a busy one, with three official visits already scheduled for the fall, and the balance of school, high school football and recruiting ready to weigh on him.
Willis has 16 schools in the mix, Arizona, Arizona State, California, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Utah, Virginia and Washington, but said that list will whittle down even more in the weeks ahead.
"Pretty soon, I'll be narrowing it down to eight to 10 schools," said Willis. "Whenever, I feel ready to narrow it down, I will. I'm not really sure which schools will all be on it. It's going to be tough to narrow it down."
Willis said the schools he's set to visit, and a couple of Pac-12 schools are likely to be on it.
"I'm visiting LSU, Nebraska and Notre Dame, so I know they'll probably be on it, and from the Pac-12, Arizona State and UCLA, but I don't' know if I'll visit them," said Willis. "I'm not really sure who else yet or if it's going to be eight or ten schools."
While Michigan isn't set for an official visit, Willis will be seeing them twice while on visits to other schools, and he said Shane Morris spent a lot of time talking with him at The Opening and Gridiron Kings.
"Shane is funny and I had the chance to kick it with him and he's a cool dude and a good quarterback," said Willis. "I am seeing Michigan on two of my trips but I don't know about an official visit yet."
Willis will visit Notre Dame on September 21st when the Irish host the Wolverines and a month later he'll be at Nebraska when the Huskers welcome Michigan on October 27th. The following weekend, November 3rd, he'll be in the Bayou when Alabama visits LSU in a rematch of the BCS National Championship game.
"I know I'll take the other two official visits too, I just don't know when or where," said Willis.
An UnderArmour All-American, Willis said he hasn't set a time frame for when he wants to decide.
"I'm not even sure," said Willis. "Whenever it feels right."
