Two years later, and from a coaching staff that is essentially all new from when he got the offer, Lopez has come full circle, committing to the Bruins on Wednesday night.
"Growing up, I was always a fan of the Pac-12 and the UCLA and USC rivalry, and having to hear what Coach (Jim) Mora had to say, and what Coach (Adrian) Klemm had to say, that's what I wanted," said Lopez.
Lopez said at The Opening that he was down to Washington and UCLA as his top two, and on Wednesday, Klemm and Mora got that call.
"It was pretty funny, Coach Klemm was all fired up and he was excited and then Coach Mora got all fired up and excited too," said Lopez.
Despite the offer coming two years ago from the previous UCLA staff, and the current UCLA staff having to basically start from scratch, Lopez always had an open mind to the Bruins.
"They really did well and stayed in contact with me, and I really felt comfortable with them and the way they approached coaching and just the whole staff," said Lopez.
Lopez said it wasn't until the last couple of weeks, though, that UCLA really emerged.
"Right after I went to talk to Coach Mora and Coach Klemm a couple of weeks ago, I kind of knew then but I held it back a couple of weeks just to make sure," said Lopez.
Lopez can play tackle or guard, and said UCLA wants him as an offensive lineman who can play a number of spots.
"I can play any position on the offensive line so they're just bringing me in as an offensive lineman," said Lopez.
With his decision done, Lopez said he can turn his attention to his senior year.
"I'm pretty sure it will be nice and no more stress, but it hasn't kicked in yet that I'm done,: said Lopez. "But we started two-a-days today and I'm getting back in the swing so it's nice to just have football now," said Lopez.
Lopez said he's also gotten to know some of UCLA's other offensive line commits, including Erik Bunte, who plays in the same league as he (Trinity League), and Christian Morris, who he camped with at the B2G Elite Camp and The Opening.
"I met Christian at the two big camps and really like him and really like all of the players we've got coming in,: said Lopez.
"My family is excited that they won't have to travel far to see me play and I'm definitely going to be going to a bunch of UCLA games this year," said Lopez.
