Prospect Preview: Week Zero

The prep football season kicks off in full effect this weekend around the West Coast and several of UCLA's commits and targets are in action, including big ones in Arizona and the Inland Empire...

Game of the Week: #6 Santa Margarita (Calif.) at #33 Phoenix (Ariz.) Brophy Prep on ESPN2 at 7:00 p.m. (Saturday)
The Eagles of Santa Margarita are loaded and have already had six players commit to BCS schools, including a UCLA commit in Erik Bunte, the four-star offensive tackle who picked the Bruins back in the spring. Nebraska quarterback commit Johnny Stanton is the headliner and led the team to a state title last season. River Cracraft, a Washington State commit, is Stanton's top target at receiver and the Eagles offensive line averages over 300 pounds and is led by Washington-bound Dane Crane and UCLA recruit Riley Sorenson. Safety Connor O'Brien, a Washington commit, leads a tough, physical defense that should be one of the state's best.  Brophy has an elite quarterback in their right with Washington State commit Tyler Bruggman. Receiver Devon Allen, who has UCLA on his short list, is Bruggman's favorite target. The four-star is also one of the top hurdlers in the nation as well. Offensive lineman Charlie Renfree is one of the state's top guard prospects and junior tackle Austin Hall has a chance to develop into one of the premier lineman in the region. Linebacker Andrew Curtis was the section defensive player of the year as a junior and fellow 'backer Robert Relf is a legitimate Div I prospect as well.

Redlands vs. Rancho Cucamonga
One of UCLA's commits will face one of UCLA's top targets in this Inland Empire clash.  Redlands, led by UCLA verbal Craig Lee at running back and recruit Walter Jones, a cornerback/receiver, will face a stout Rancho Cucamonga defense that is anchored by safety target Tahaan Goodman and USC commit Chris Hawkins at cornerback, as well as the Latu twins, Alani and Viliami, at linebacker.

Westlake Village Oaks Christian at Loomis Del Oro
Del Oro made it to the CIF State D-II Bowl Game last year, where they lost to Helix but won their CIF-SacJoaquin Section title.  Oaks Christian goes on the road for a big road test, behind a defense led by UCLA commit Cameron Judge at linebacker.  The Lions also feature three key underclassmen on the offense, 2014 quarterback Brandon Dawkins, the State Sophomore of the Year last season, 2015 offensive lineman Reno Rosene and 2015 receiver Darick Holmes, who has a UCLA offer.  Del Oro is led by San Jose State commit Brandon Monroe.

La Mirada vs. St. Paul
In the debut of former Carson and Jordan coach Elijah Asante, St. Paul, which features two 2014 prospects with offers, running back Kurt Scoby and tight end Darrell Cloy, takes on a loaded La Mirada school, which, despite being stuck with DERF18 as an alum, has overcome and has players like elite 2014 prospect Tyler Luatua and 2015 quarterback Kevin Dillman.  Luatua is already the most heavily pursued prospect in the West in his class.  UCLA is also watching 2013 linebacker Koa Kaleopaa closely this fall.

Orange Lutheran vs. Long Beach Wilson
Featuring UCLA commit John Lopez on the offensive line, the Lancers play their first game with new coach Chuck Petersen this weekend when they face fellow Pac-5 program Long Beach Wilson out of the Moore League.

Los Angeles Salesian vs. Baldwin Park Sierra Vista
UCLA verbal Jermaine Kelly stars at both receiver and cornerback for Salesian, in his first game with the program.  He'll have quarterback Jihad Vercher trying to get him the ball.  Salesian also has a pair of 2014 studs in athlete Marquis Ware, who UCLA has offered as well as athlete Jamardre Cobb.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame at Gardena Serra
An intriguing matchup of two traditionally strong programs has a Serra team that is on its way back up against a Notre Dame team that is trying to avoid looking ahead to next week's game in Ireland.  The Cavs are led by UCLA 2014 targets Adoree Jackson (cornerback) and Dwight Williams (linebacker).  The Knights have running back Khalfani Muhammed, who has a UCLA offer, and quarterback Kelly Hilinski.

Encino Crespi at Woodland Hills Taft
The annual game in the Valley features one of UCLA's chief targets on defense, safety Tyler Foreman from Crespi, as well as another two players that UCLA is watching in safety Brandon Arnold and defensive end Ray Davision.

Fresno Central vs. Hanford
The vaunted Fresno Central secondary will be down UCLA target Johnny Johnson, who's sitting out the first two games because of a transfer last season, but the Tigers will feature another UCLA target in L.J. Moore at corner and Hatari Byrd, who committed to Oklahoma, but whom UCLA hasn't given up on, at safety.  The Tigers also feature a 2014 prospect with a UCLA offer, receiver Michiah Quick.

Other UCLA Commits in Action
Memphis (Tenn.) East offensive tackle Christian Morris and his squad look for their first win of the season when they take Eads (Tenn.) Briarcrest Christian in their second game of the season.

UCLA Commits Starting Next Week
Rialto (Calif.) Carter defensive tackle Kenneth Clark starts next week against Ontario (Calif.) Chaffey.  Fallbrook (Calif.) offensive tackle Sean Dowling gets going next week against Spring Valley (Calif.) Mount Miguel.  Marrieta (Ga.) Lassiter quarterback Eddie Printz starts the season next week against Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove.  Bellevue (Wash.) linebacker Myles Jack begins his season next week against Euless (Texas) Trinity.  Missouri City (Texas) Marshall linebacker Deon Hollins will start his season in two weeks against Houston (Texas) Chavez.
