UCLA Prospect Recap- Week One

A look at how UCLA's commits and recruits did in week one action, led by a big game from Bellevue (Wash.) verbal Myles Jack...

Game of the Week: #7 Bellevue (Wash.) def. #21 Euless (Texas) Trinity, 31-24 (OT)
One of the biggest matchups in the country had UCLA commit Myles Jack taking control on defense, and making some key plays on offense, helping Bellevue outlast Euless Trinity in overtime.  Jack ran for 118 yards on five carries and a touchdown, including a 66-yard score and a nine-yard run that set up the go-ahead touchdown in offense.  But it was his play on defense that swung the game in the Wolverines favor.  Jack had double-digit tackles and two sacks, none bigger than his sack in the final minute of regulation that stalled Trinity's drive, and knocked out the starting quarterback.  The backup quarterback came in and threw an interception on Trinity's first play in overtime, giving the Wolverines the win.

Santa Margarita (Calif.) def. Long Beach Jordan, 35-6
Santa Margarita's first game back in the Golden State was an easy win over a fellow Pac-5 program, Long Beach Jordan.  The Eagles kept the two Pac-12 receivers that Jordan has, John Ross and Rashead Johnson, out of the end zone, and Nebraska commit Johnny Stanton ran for two touchdowns and threw for two in the win.

Redlands def. Fontana Summit, 21-12
Redlands, led by UCLA verbal Craig Lee at running back, wore down Summit in a matchup of two Inland Empire foes. The four-star Lee ran for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns to give the Terriers their first win of the season.

Westlake Village Oaks Christian def. Granite Bay, 48-13
Oaks Christian took out their second CIF-SacJoaquin Section opponent in as many weeks, a 48-13 trouncing of Granite Bay.  Junior quarterback Brandon Dawkins was 19-for-25 for 326 yards and two touchdown passes while running for a touchdown.  One of his touchdown passes went to UCLA commit Cameron Judge, who also ran for a touchdown.  Sophomore Darick Holmes, who UCLA offered already, had a 96-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a 41-yard touchdown return in the win.

Carter def. Chaffey, 54-0
UCLA commit Kenneth Clark had four tackles, a sack and a 19-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to help Carter rout Chaffey in a shutout win in their opener.

La Mirada def. La Habra, 45-27
La Mirada scored 28 points in the first quarter en route to a blowout of neighboring nemesis La Habra.  UCLA recruit Tyler Luatua, a 2014 prospect, had six catches for 53 yards in the win.

Orange Lutheran def. La Verne Damien, 31-14
The Lancers had their second big game on the ground, rushing for 263 yards in a 17-point win over Damien.  UCLA commit John Lopez and the Lancers offensive line paved the way for four rushing touchdowns.

Hacienda Heights Los Altos def. Los Angeles Salesian, 48-34
UCLA verbal Jermaine Kelly had a big game with five catches for 147 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn't enough for Salesian.  UCLA 2014 recruit Marquis Ware caught three passes for 53 yards and 2014 recruit Jamardre Cobb had a touchdown reception in the loss for Salesian.

Fresno Central def. Bakersfield Liberty, 10-9
The vaunted Fresno Central secondary played their last game without UCLA target Johnny Johnson, but the defense had no problem, limiting Liberty to 250 yards.  Junior defensive lineman Tashon Smallwood had two sacks and four tackles for loss and junior safety Devon Brewer had a pair of breakups.  Junior receiver Michiah Quick, who has a UCLA offer, had eight receptions.  Nick Wilson, a junior running back, rushed for over 100 yards for the second straight game.

Marrieta (Ga.) Lassiter def. Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove, 37-29
After jumping out to a 37-0 lead at the half, Lassiter had to hold on against a Hillgrove rally that saw them score 29 unanswered points, and have the ball, driving for the potentially tying touchdown, in the final minute.  UCLA commit Eddie Printz threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Other UCLA Commits in Action
Memphis (Tenn.) East offensive tackle Christian Morris and his squad got their first win of the season, a 32-6 victory over Memphis Central.  Rialto (Calif.) Carter defensive tackle Kenneth Clark starts this week against Ontario (Calif.) Chaffey.  Fallbrook (Calif.) offensive tackle Sean Dowling lost his opener to Spring Valley (Calif.) Mount Miguel, 50-33.

Missouri City (Texas) Marshall linebacker Deon Hollins will start his season this week against Houston (Texas) Chavez.
