Bunte to Leave Santa Margarita

Former Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Santa Margarita offensive lineman Erik Bunte made a surprising decision on Tuesday when he decided to transfer to nearby Mission Viejo (Calif.)...

Erik Bunte, an early UCLA commit, started at guard for the Eagles last year before moving to tackle this season. He missed much of the spring and summer recovering from an injury but has started for the Eagles in their first two games of the season.

"Under the current circumstances, I don't feel like I'm capable of my reaching my true potential at Santa Margarita," Bunte said. "For some reason, my relationship with some of the coaches changed from last year and I strongly lacked respect.

"I'm definitely going to miss the guys on the team. They're all incredible players and I wish them the best season ever. I just didn't feel like the program was the right fit for me any more. Since I actually live in Mission Viejo, I'll have immediate eligibility and I'll be able to play right away so I'm very excited about that."

Bunte has been committed to UCLA since March but said schools are still recruiting him.

"California and Arizona State have both offered me and want me to visit," Bunte said. "I'm not sure about visits right now. I know I'll visit UCLA but I haven't decided on any other visits at this time. My commitment is solid and I'm still very high on UCLA."
