Kelly Solid With the Bruins

The Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian cornerback, Jermaine Kelly, talked about his UCLA verbal and what the Bruin coaches want him to play...

Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian cornerback Jermaine Kelly flew well below the radar when he was at San Pedro (Calif.), but once he got to Salesian, the floodgates opened for him.

In June, Kelly was offered by UCLA and Washington after camping at each school, and in July, he chose the hometown Bruins to continue his football career.

But despite committing to a Pac-12 school, Kelly knows he's still got a bit to go to be the player he'd like.

"I'm always looking to get better," said Kelly. "I really wasn't content with how I played last year and this year, I want to do more. I'm happy with what we did as a team this last weekend, but I still think we could have done more. It's not being greedy. I just want to do what I can to help my team. If it weren't for penalties, we could have put up a 100 points."

As it was, Salesian put up 46 points, with Kelly having an interception, but two touchdowns were erased, a 41-yard touchdown reception and an 80-yard kickoff return for a score, by penalties.

"It's very frustrating, but you can't let it get to you," said Kelly. "Deion Sanders said it best, you have to have a short memory. So we move on, and we're just going to stay hungry and stay humble and try to win CIF."

Looking ahead, Kelly said he's excited about playing for the Bruins.

"I had a great time at the (Nebraska) game, and it was a great game," said Kelly. "I'm very solid to UCLA. I may take a visit to Washington during my bye week when they play Stanford (on September 27th), but I'm not sure yet and I don't know about other ones just yet."

Kelly said that receivers coach Eric Yarber originally started to recruit him, before other coaches got involved.

"Coach Yarbs has this region and he was the first coach to recruit me, but when Coach Meat (Demetrice Martin) realized my specialty was corner, he jumped in. I talk with both of them, Coach (Lou) Spanos and Coach (Jim) Mora all the time. They like me as a corner, but they want to bring me in as an athlete," said Kelly.

Boise State was by the Salesian campus on Friday, still checking on Kelly.

"They asked for my film and transcripts, and wanted to check me out some," said Kelly.

In the meantime, Kelly and Salesian prepare for a game against Pasadena, who will be without Arizona commit Brandon Cox.

Kelly said he will be at the UCLA-Houston game on Saturday.

Brandon is in his eighth year with FOX Sports NEXT, currently as a National Recruiting Analyst and West Regional Manager. Prior to joining the FOX Sports NEXT Recruiting Team, he was a team recruiting writer.  He's been covering recruiting for the FOX Sports NEXT network since 2003.
